Giripremi's Mt. Srikanta Expedition Aug.-Sept. 2008
Anand Mali - (Expedition Leader)
Youth symbol of enthusiasm, courage and energy. There is need to channelize this energy and involve the youth in the constructive activities. The need is to encourage them to the new challenges. You can find the challenges in deep blue sea, in the arid desert, in the Artic zone or in the snow clad high mountains. Since beginning mountains have challenged the youth. For past more than 25 years Giripremi has provided a platform to the vibrant youth to explore themselves in the vicinity of mountains. Last year Giripremi celebrated silver jubilee of the aspirational mountaineering activities with an equally ambitious Mt. Shivling (6543m) Expedition. After the success of Mt. Shivling, young climbers in the club were looking for more challenging expeditions, to explore new areas. We selected Mt. Srikanta (6133M) as our next challenge. In spite of low height, the remoteness of this region has made this peak barely scalable. Nobody turned to this peak since 1998. Till then there were only three successful expeditions to this mountain. One from Canada another from UK and the third one was Indian women expedition in which renowned climbers Chandraprabha Aitwal and Suman Kutiyal (Everester) participated. Very little has been written and discussed about this peak. Remoteness, difficult camping locations, steep icewall and narrow summit ridge covered by cornice are key challenges of this expedition.
Mountaineering is an extreme sport. It's play grounds are far from the civilization. It demands high quality equipment for safety and survival. It's probably the sport which has longest time frame. Generally, an expedition continues for several days and sometime months. All these factors impose a burden off high costs on this sport.
