International Mountain Day

On the occasion of International Mountain Day on December 11, our team at Giripremi undertook a unique initiative of paying tribute to the veteran mountaineers who have lost their lives in the mountains. It was a heartening experience to visit the families of a few of our friends we had lost under unfortunate circumstances in the mountains.

Late Mr. Nandu Page (1986 Satopanth Expedition), Mr. Bharat Mangre (1986 Satopanth Expedition), Dr. Meenu Mehta (1986 Satopanth Expedition), Dr. D. T. Kulkarni (1992 Everest Expedition) among others, were few families we had the privilege of visiting.

It was an effort to let their dear ones know that through all these years our family has only extended and become stronger. We wanted to let them know they’re not alone; that we, as fellow mountaineers are always by their side. And that we are forever grateful for the valuable contribution these mountaineers have made to the sport.

  1. I was involved in the search and rescue mission for nandu page and meenu Mehta by helicopter ex uttarkashi helipad. I had the fortune of meeting Meenu’s father along with Bechendri pal and Col Bajaj (boss of nmi). I still recall every moment of the search that we did. I am writing a book on helicopter flying and am including this story. Can anyone please help me with some details please. Regards. Air Cmde Nitin Sathe. Indian Air Force

Mountaineering is an extreme sport. It's play grounds are far from the civilization. It demands high quality equipment for safety and survival. It's probably the sport which has longest time frame. Generally, an expedition continues for several days and sometime months. All these factors impose a burden off high costs on this sport.
