Varroc partially sponsored two mountaineering expeditions held in April – May 2016, world’s 6th highest Mt. Cho oyu and 7th highest Mt. Dhaulagiri. Our colleague and veteran mountaineer Pawan Hadole (R&D – VPPL TC), is a member of Giripremi Climbers club which scaled up world’s 7th highest mount Dhaulagiri on 19th May 2016 at 11:30 AM.
Here is an excerpt of Pawan’s thrilling experience. “The height of Mount Dhaulagiri is 8,167 metres (26,795 ft) above sea level. Four climbers including Pawan commenced this expedition under leadership of Mr. Umesh Zirpe (ShivChatrapati awardee). Geographical condition can affect an expedition, as height goes on increasing it gets colder as temperature drops to as low as - 400 C to -500 C and at times there is only 4 to 5 % oxygen available in the air. Wind blow at 60-100 km per hour causes avalanche while sudden snow fall halts expedition. Precautionary measures are taken before expedition such as carrying oxygen cylinders, high altitude clothes to protect from extreme weather conditions and high altitude food packets to appease the hunger”, explains Pawan.
Daily cardio sessions for stamina improvement, hill running, rock climbing, yoga sessions are some of the pre climbing routine workouts practised by climbers for 5 months. Pawan keeps him fit with regular workouts throughout the year preparing for next expedition.
Pawan is thankful to his team mates who supported by sharing his responsibilities during his absence. The expedition was successful, however Pawan fell sick and descended from 7000 meters. Getting selected in 8000m high mountain expedition is nothing less than qualifying for Olympics and Varroc wishes him all the very best for next expedition!

Mountaineering is an extreme sport. It's play grounds are far from the civilization. It demands high quality equipment for safety and survival. It's probably the sport which has longest time frame. Generally, an expedition continues for several days and sometime months. All these factors impose a burden off high costs on this sport.
